During That Summer Poem Reflection

During that summer
When unicorns were still possible;
When the purpose of knees
Was to be skinned;
When shiny horse chestnuts
(Hallowed out
Fitted with straws
Crammed with tobacco
Stolen from butts
In family ashtrays)
Were puffed in green lizard silence
While straddling thick branches
Far above and away
From the softening effects
Of civilization;
During that summer-
Which may never have been at all;
But which has become more real
Than the one that was-
Watermelons ruled.

This poem is talking about all the good and innocent things of being a kid. You still believe in magical things such as Unicorns, you only go outside to play with your friends, and climb trees. To me, this poem represents the happiness of being naive.

Flouride

Most people approve fluoride in their water, but the amount of fluoride in your water is more harmful to your teeth then helpful. In 1901, a young dental graduate student named Frederick S. McKay decided to look into it. He was astonished to see how many people had brown stain on their teeth from obtaining too much fluoride. Later, McKay discovered that the drinking water’s naturally occurring fluoride was at a helpful level, but when we add the extra fluoride, it made the water harmful.

Some people disapprove of putting fluoride in your toothpaste and water because people have realized that if you take in too much, brown stains will appear. Now, they stop using fluoridated anything. I believe that they will never again use fluoridated anything because they are afraid of the stains coming back.

If I could have a say in whether or not to put fluoride in drinking water, I would say yes. If people know not then, then they wont, or hopefully they wont. Most water already has a fluoride level of one ppm, which is the level needed to strengthen your teeth. Adding all the unnecessary fluoride just makes it worse. The government did not allow excess fluoride in the water anymore, so they fortified all tap water, this process led to toothpaste and mouthwash. I can not tell you what side affect concerns me the most because they all do. I am frightened by the fact that too much fluoride could weaken my teeth, which in the long run could end up in having your teeth fall out. Honestly, I would rather have strong teeth than a slight brown stain on them. How would that affect the community?

Back in the day of the 18th century, people used cinnamon and dragons blood to make a paste to put on their teeth. It wasn’t until the 20th century when the Food and Drug Administration added strawberries or green sage to make it taste better. Today, some of the same ingredients today.

I am most afraid of the fact that cancer can be caused by obtaining too much fluoride. It hasn’t happened to humans yet, but it has happened to animals. Overdoses of fluoride are rare now-a-days, because the excessive fluoride has been taken out. If fluoride exists naturally, then there is not reason to add more. Fluoride is very helpful if the right amount is used.
